Tips for Eye Allergies & Contacts Wearers
Tips for Eye Allergies & Contacts Wearers

Contact lenses and sensitive skin around the eyes - along with hay fever and other allergies - can make wearing cosmetics difficult at times. Many people with allergies find that products labeled "hypoallergenic" work best. Typically, hypoallergenic cosmetics lack ingredients, such as preservatives and fragrances that are known to cause allergic reactions.(1)
For this very reason, many dermatologists recommend eye shadows and powder foundations that are made from natural minerals to their patients with sensitive, allergy-prone skin. Some mineral shadows also contain beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E), soy, and silk powder.(2)
Many eye creams and undereye concealers also contain antioxidants. Use these products to minimize the appearance of puffy eyes or dark circles. If you have very sensitive skin, test a small amount on the inside of your arm first. If you suspect a product is causing an allergic reaction, stop using it for a few days to see if your symptoms clear up.
Finally, a few tips for contact lens wearers:
Minerals in Makeup: Healthful for Your Skin?
Minerals in Makeup: Healthful for Your Skin?

Cosmetics containing natural minerals are not new to the beauty market. Natural minerals have been used in makeup for several decades. Mineral powder foundations can help hide imperfections, such as blotchy, red skin, and can also help control shine, particularly if your skin is oily.
Recent technical advances now enable mineral powder foundations to provide aesthetic benefits and improve the overall health of the skin.(1) Many dermatologists recommend mineral foundations to their patients with sensitive skin. Unlike many other traditional foundations, most products containing minerals are less likely to have irritating ingredients.
Mineral powder foundations can be formulated to include beneficial ingredients such as sunscreen (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide), antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E), soy, and silk powder. When used on a daily basis, these enhanced powder foundations can protect the skin while improving uneven skin tone, texture, and clarity.
In addition, mineral powder foundations are generally oil-free, are found to be non-irritating and gentle to sensitive or acne-prone skin.

When shopping for a concealer, search for one that does more than cover blemishes. Look for concealers and foundations that also contain salicylic acid, an acne medication that penetrates clogged pores to quickly and effectively treat blemishes.(1)
For best results and the safest use, follow these simple steps:
1) Wash your face with a gentle cleanser or mild soap. Pat dry.
2) Apply a small amount of concealer directly onto your blemish using a light dabbing motion. Blend in the concealer with a facial sponge.
3) Select an oil-free foundation in a tint that matches your skin color. Be sure that it is labeled "non-comedogenic" (won't clog pores) and "non-acnegenic" (won't cause acne). Foundations with salicylic acid will also help to clear and prevent emerging breakouts.
4) To reduce shine, use a makeup brush to dust a light coat of oil-free, translucent powder over your face.
5) Always use a mild cleanser or makeup remover to completely remove cosmetics from your skin before you go to bed.
