All About Acne Part Three: Common Ways to Clear Up Acne

Routine and the right products are the most common ways to clear up acne and help prevent future breakouts. In Part Three of our handy "All About Acne" series, we take you through the most common ways to clear up acne and a simple step-by-step regimen. Let’s get started!

Step One: Wash Your Face

This probably seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t wash their face regularly. If you have acne-prone skin, we recommend using a gentle cleanser and washing your face with your fingertips twice a day: when you wake up and before you go to bed.

Our suggested cleanser: Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Cream Cleanser

Step Two: Treat Acne

The most stubborn acne is often what you can’t see below the surface. It may seem impossible to treat, but Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide are proven acne-fighting ingredients. To help stop acne below the surface from becoming visible, incorporate a gentle treatment into your routine. Apply a small amount all over your face before you put on sunscreen in the morning. You can skip the sunscreen when you use the treatment at night.

Our suggested treatment: Stubborn Acne AM Treatment

Step Three: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Yes, even oily skin needs moisture. Applying a lightweight moisturizer regularly helps maintain your skin’s natural moisture barrier and leaves your skin feeling soft. While we recommend applying moisturizer twice a day, it’s especially important to wear sunscreen during the day — even when it’s cloudy.

Our suggested moisturizer: Neutrogena® Oil-Free Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 35

Acne-Fighting Add-Ons

Customize your regimen with add-ons depending on your skin type. If you have really oily skin, a mild toner helps to reduce breakouts, minimize swelling and redness and even out your skin tone. Dab a small amount on a cotton ball and swipe over face after cleansing.
