Easy Eyeshadow Tutorial and Color Guide

Want to create a wink-worthy eye look? We have your lids covered. Our easy step-by-step tutorial will teach you how to apply eyeshadow layers and blend colors like a pro. But first, let’s start with shadow selection.

Eye Shadow Color Guide

Play up your unique eye color with eyeshadows that make them pop. Neutrogena® Makeup Artist Expert Amy Oresman put together this color guide as inspiration.

Blue Eyes
To brighten blue eyes and naturally highlight deep shades of blue, wear warm copper or earthy bronze tones.
Brown Eyes
To enhance brown eyes and add contrast, use a deep espresso or dark steel shade paired with a neutral color.
Green Eyes
To make green eyes shine like emeralds, try mauves and burgundy browns that enhance your natural golden-green tones.

How to Apply Eyeshadow

Now that your eyeshadow palette is picked out, you can focus on how to apply eyeshadow.

  • Set the base color by sweeping a light shade over lids from lash line to crease.

  • Highlight brow bones with a neutral shimmery shade starting from the inner corner and moving outwards.

  • Add contrast by blending a deep shade into creases.

  • Using your favorite pencil eyeliner or liquid eyeliner, draw a thin line along the base of your lashes. For a smokey effect, gently smudge the liner. Try Neutrogena Smokey Kohl Eyeliner.

  • Complete the look with your favorite mascara. Try Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara.

And that’s all there is to it! Don’t forget to tag your eyeshadow looks with #Neutrogena.
