Knowledge is power in the fight against acne.

Learning more about the different types of acne and what causes them can help you stop breakouts before they stop you.

Acne is commonly related to overly oily skin. So where does the oil that causes acne come from? The oil glands beneath your skin create oily sebum to protect your skin and keep it hydrated. The problem starts when your body produces too much sebum, and it becomes trapped in your pores due to excessive desquamation, or skin shedding. The sebum in the clogged pore promotes the growth of a certain bacteria (called P. acnes) that creates the perfect set-up for breakouts.

What's the difference?

When your pores get clogged deep down under the skin's surface with oil and dead skin cells a whitehead (a whitish or skin-colored bump) appears. A blackhead is like a whitehead, but it appears when a pore gets clogged closer to the surface of your skin.

The best way to fight blackheads and whiteheads and to remove excess oil is with acne treatments that clear pores, remove dead skin cells or also kill acne-causing bacteria. Remember to stick with your treatment because it can often take a period of time to start seeing results.

Get control over oily skin.

Due to significant hormonal changes occurring during puberty, teenagers tend to produce more oily sebum than children or adults. You can't change your age, but there are other things you do have control over. If you have oily skin, be sure to use oil-free makeup and hair products. Oil-based makeup and hair sprays can make acne worse. And though it may be tempting, keep hands off your acne. Pressure on the skin can aggravate a breakout.

Another thing to look out for is stress. When you feel stressed, your body produces a hormone called cortisol. This hormone causes your body to create more sebum plus it lowers your immune system. So you get more oil in your pores and less of a fighting chance against acne. Result? More breakouts! Things like getting enough sleep, doing yoga, meditating, or any kind of exercise can help you reduce stress.
