As the phenomenal Audre Lorde said, “for Black women, self-care isn’t a luxury, self-care is self-preservation,” In times like these, it’s so important to put self-care at the forefront of our routines to affirm our worth and value.
I recently led some mindful movement and breathing exercises and shared a bit of my care & wellness routine in partnership with Neutrogena®. Follow along below where you’ll also see a special appearance by my dog, Ms. Josephine Baker!
Our mental and emotional health is vital to our well-being and helps us to be there for our families and this movement. Here are a few tips that I’ve been incorporating into my own self-care practice to cultivate internal and external wellness.
Self-care often means going back to basics and putting your attention on what’s most essential: the breath. When we create space and time to breathe, we’re letting our nervous system know that we’re ready to slow down, quiet the mind and warm up the body. No matter what’s going on around you, it’s important to try to find a few moments each day to focus on your breath. Whether that be outside (I love to do this in my garden), in a comfortable chair, or on the floor, try to keep your spine long, stretched, and relax your muscles. As you breathe in and out, there’s always going to be noise and distractions, but try to stay with yourself in a loving and gentle way.
Mental Health is everything - I’m a firm believer in therapy! Taking care of your emotional well-being is as vital as taking care of your physical one. We must not undervalue what we need, in order to stay feeling good. If it’s a therapist, friend, or family member please make sure that you have someone that you can talk to, so that you never feel that you have to be in it alone. And remember that there are resources out there to help when times are tough.
My skin is a barometer for my self-care: if it’s not looking healthy, then I know I’m not putting myself first. As women, we are always on double duty, so when you focus on the skincare part of self-care, you are doing something that is good for you internally and externally. We all know life can be busy and hectic, so when possible, I multi-task, and I love when my skincare products do too.
When I’m outside doing yoga, I put on my Neutrogena Hydro Boost sunscreen that protects my skin while keeping it moisturized and healthy. I’m also religious about washing my face, and the Neutrogena wipes are a convenient and amazing way to make sure I’m taking that moment to take care of my skin — even if a brief moment is all I have.
A consistent self-care routine – exercise, drinking water, paying attention to skincare, making time for mental health –are all key ways we can feel good. So, remember, deep breaths, and take care of yourself, ladies!
